After a pretty tiring week in Porto, we leave somewhat disappointed with a 9th place finish. The #99 EDGE was once again “on the pace”, however, in the last qualifying session I had a pretty controversial penalty which I think made me a little apprehensive in our Top 12 run.
My goal was to fly “clean” and get into the Super 8’s and then “go for it” to get into the final four. In retrospect, I probably flew a little too conservatively which cost me some time and thus failing to advance into the Super 8.
There is a very fine line between too aggressive and not quite aggressive enough, today I was on the wrong side of that line.
As Barcelona is the last race of the year, we will be pushing hard.
Well, today the fog lifted enough to complete one short training session and then the Qualification.
If you can’t make it to the race in Portugal – don’t worry – you can watch it LIVE on the Red Bull Air Race website in real-time.

A short video recap of Michael Goulian’s 2009 Budapest Red Bull Air Race win!
After a tremendous amount of effort over the past couple of seasons, Team #99’s passion, dedication, and persistence paid off with a super win in the great city of Budapest.
Today was a good day for the #99 Team in Qualifying. In the first Q1 session, we finished 2nd so we were easily in the Top 12 round for tomorrow. Job Done!!
So far, the Budapest week has gone very well for our team. In the four training sessions leading up to qualifying on Wednesday, we have placed 1st, 2nd, 1st, and 3rd respectively for the four sessions.
Even though we travel around the world doing what we love, it’s always a pleasure to get involved with our home town news!
The race #99 EDGE 540 is assembled and test flown and all is going well. It looks like many of the teams have made modifications and even some engine changes have been made during the break between Windsor and Budapest.
The air show in Salinas, CA gave Michael the perfect opportunity to give a few aerobatic rides to the Blue Angel crew – since he had the chance to ride with them in March!
“Wings versus wheels” at Oshkosh’s AirVenture! On Wednesday and Thursday of AirVenture, air show and race pilots, Michael Goulian and Kirby Chambliss had the opportunity to race 2 new Ford 2010 Shelby GT500s.
